Summer Essentials for Doggie days at the Beach

As the 4th of July weekend approaches our thoughts naturally turn to sun filled, fun filled days at the beach. Living on Long Island we are blessed to be able to enjoy many beautiful beaches with our pets. The beaches on Long Island are among its most popular attractions. Spending the day or afternoon with your pet at a local beach can be joyous for both of you and even more enjoyable if you are prepared.

Always have fresh cool water on hand – Keep a few extra bottles in a mini cooler as dogs get very thirsty while playing in the sun and swimming. Bring a portable drinking bowl, like the Travel Bowl Set below with its own carrier by Harry Barker. Encourage your dog to take a drinks frequently, as consumption of Salt Water can be very harmful to your beloved four legged friend. We love the travel bowls below at FETCH. They are also handy to carry with you on a long walk or romp at the dog run. You can even store a set of keys and some cash in them to make things even easier.

Pet Friendly Sunscreen – Apply to the top of your dog’s ears and snout, not the actual nose. If your dog is shorthaired, white or light haired in color you may also want to protect the back and stomach. Our Pet Sunscreen at FETCH is non oily, non-irritating and water soluble. So remember to reapply after swimming!

Waterproof Harness or Collar – Salt water and exposure to the elements can eventually damage a regular harness or collar. We love this one from Doggie Design. It’s lightweight, adjustable and the bright colors are sure to keep your dog in view and looks great on too!

A Roomy Open Air Carrier – Like the one shown. Our favorite at FETCH is made out of Sturdy Canvas and available with four colors of trim, Navy, Red, Orange and Brown. This Classic Pet Tote by Wag Wear is a beach comber’s delight! Roomy enough to pack a towel and other essential items also. Smaller dogs may get tired after a few hours at the beach and this tote will allow you to give your little one a rest or help you enjoy a stroll down the boardwalk!

Treats – We all know that the salt air can work up an appetite. Bring a few treats with you to the beach to help you avoid sharing your lunch! The Lobster Roll below is one of our bestselling summer treats! Made with only 4 ingredients, Organic Barley Flour, Maine Lobster, organic Kelp and Parsley these dog biscuits from Bocce’s Bakery of NYC are the perfect beach snack! Wheat free and 100% USA sourced and baked of Human-Grade ingredients. Delicious!

Long Leash – Not a retractable leash. You may want to keep your dog on a leash while they enjoy the water. Strong currents at some Long Island beaches can prove dangerous for you and your dog, even the strongest of swimmers.

Lifejacket – Some dogs are not good swimmers so if you are going to be on a boat or out in deeper water, give your dog a boost to keep him or her buoyant and help them enjoy the water!
